A new fishing license may help California tackle a problem with fish August 24, 2021 August 24, 2021 admin

The state may be in the process of revising its state fishing license system to address a lack of fish, but it’s not going to go away.

The Fish and Game Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to expand its fishing license requirements from five species to six and to extend the time for applicants to get licenses from the state, a move that comes as more California residents are getting their licenses.

The commission said the changes will be phased in over time.

The changes come amid a nationwide crackdown on illegal fishing in areas like central California, which has seen a boom in demand from tourists looking for entertainment and recreational fishing.

A California fishery board spokeswoman said Tuesday that the new rules would only apply to people in California who are registered with the department and have completed at least 10 days of fishing with a fish licensed by the bureau.

The state has about 2,400 licensed fisheries and has about 40,000 licenses issued.
