In 2016, a study by the University of NSW’s Graduate Centre for Employment Studies found that the number of homeless people who visited restaurants for lunch increased by over 80% in the year before the report was published.

In Sydney, the number was more than five times higher.

“There’s been a huge increase in food deserts across Australia in recent years,” Dr James said.

“It’s a huge problem.”

Dr James is also concerned about the increasing number of restaurants that don’t have the proper ventilation, or that are not properly sanitised.

“We’re seeing a lot of places that aren’t sanitising, there’s not proper ventilation in places, or don’t wash their hands after people are eating, or not properly wash their dishes after people eat,” he said.

It’s been difficult for people to find affordable housing, he said, and people who work in restaurants are also being forced to rely on the hospitality industry for their livelihood.

“I think people are starting to realise that this is not sustainable.”

There is one company in Melbourne that has been working to change that, though.

The Ritz-Carlton, located in Fitzroy, has been serving up healthy meals to homeless people for years, and the problem has only grown since the ABC first reported the trend in 2015.

The company has now been working with a local organisation to improve the dining environment, and has started a program called “Food For Everyone”.

“We want to build a community, where people are coming together to get a meal for themselves and their families, and we think this is something we can do,” said Ritz chief executive Peter Devereux.

“We’re really excited to have that community on board and to work with them on the way we’re going to make that happen.”

Dr Devereaux said the company was looking to provide meals for homeless people on the basis that they were in need.

“The food will be made at the restaurant and served to them, so they can feel safe,” he explained.

“You’ll see us serving up hot dishes, but you’ll see a different food menu on our menu than the food you normally see on the street.”

Dr Paul Tietze, from the Institute of Public Health and Social Work, said the study’s findings were concerning.

“When you see a person with food deserts, it’s quite a big deal because it’s not uncommon to find food in a landfill,” he told the ABC.

“That’s the case in the inner-city, and in the north-west and central Sydney as well, there are large food deserts that we’ve identified.”

He said there were some very good options for homeless Australians, such as providing them with food through the local community or through the Department of Human Services.

“But it’s also a challenge to give people a proper meal at the moment,” he added.

Dr Tietes study found that about 20% of those with a food desert were homeless.

He said that was a significant increase from the last time the study was done, in 2011.

“And the problem is, when you’ve got people who are homeless, it means that they don’t get a proper diet,” he warned.

The study also found that in Sydney, more than 80% of people who said they needed a meal were eating at least one food item, such to chicken, pasta or meat.

Mr Devereix said that the company’s food would only be available to those who were in urgent need of a meal.

“At this stage, it would be good to see a number of our restaurants make the change and offer food to the community that are in need,” he argued.

“This is an opportunity for us to show that this can be done.”

The Rizs are working with the Department for Human Services to make the changes, and are also offering meals to people in need through their own food pantry.

Mr Tiete also said that if the company did not see the need for such a program, he would have no problem with making the change himself.

“If it’s just me and the food I get for my family, then I’m fine with it, but if it’s a group of people, then we’d be a bit worried,” he advised.

“So it’s important to take the time and make the effort to get the change, and if that’s not possible, then get on board.”

The report also highlighted the need to find better food options for those in the community.

“In the past two years, there have been over 60 cases of food deserts in the Sydney CBD, and this has led to food shortages for people who need it most,” Dr Deveux said.

He suggested that people were more likely to seek out a more affordable food option from restaurants if they were not in need of it.
